Calling all Cub Scouts! Or rather, future Cub Scouts. You and your parents can learn all about Scouting from 6 pm to 8 pm at Morristown’s South Street Creamery, 146 South St..
How do birds know when to fly south for the winter? Ask noted birder Jonathan Klizas at 7 pm at the Morristown & Township Library. Klizas is an associate naturalist for the New Jersey Audubon Society, and founder and editor of mocosocoBirds.com, a popular website for birding in Morris and Somerset Counties. Admission: Free. Honest Abe…a propagandist? Author Jonathan Lurie, professor-emeritus of history at Rutgers, makes the case before the North Jersey Civil War Round Table at 7:14 pm, at the Haggerty Education Center of the Frelinghuysen Arboretum, 353 E. Hanover Ave., Morris Twp. (opposite the Morris County Library). Admission: $5; members and students, free. The first 23 students to attend will receive a free limited edition of Gone for a Soldier: Jerseymen in the Civil War.
Black Lives Matter Morristown plans a peaceful vigil at 8 pm at the Cauldwell Playground, to mourn black men shot by police across the country and discuss “racism and injustice in America today.” All are invited. At Clyde Potts Drive and Flagler Street.
FRIDAY, SEPT. 23:
Last year, Kristin Chenoweth gave a season opener that was so spectacular, Morristown’s Mayo Performing Arts Center invited her back to launch this season–with two shows! She’s here tonight, and again on Saturday, at 8 pm. Admission: $79-$149. At 100 South St. Call 973-539-8008 for more.
The Minstrel in Morris Township presents a special concert by the Welsh group Calan, at 8 pm. Tickets: $17 in advance and $20 at the door. At the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, 21 Normandy Heights Road.
SATURDAY, SEPT. 24:
Don’t be alarmed by lots of alarms around 8 am in Morris Township: It’s only an emergency response drill.
The Morris Plains Farmers Market runs every Saturday through Oct. 8, 2016, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Speedwell Avenue Merchant Block across from the train station.
Morristown’s second Parks and Ponds Day, co-sponsored by the Morristown Clean Communities Program and Morristown Beautiful, starts at 9 a.m. at Burnham Park. Volunteers will learn about water preservation while removing litter from Burnham Lake, Footes Pond and Speedwell Lake. A cookout, Eco Fair and rubber duck race follow at Burnham Park at 11:30 am. SUNDAY, SEPT. 25:
The Morristown Farmers Market is back for its 26th season, every Sunday through Nov. 20 from 8:30 am to 2 pm, in parking lot 10 between Morris and Spring streets.
New Jersey AIDS Services hosts its Bike For Life fundraiser with rides of 50 miles (8:30 am) and 25 miles (12:30 pm), starting and ending at the nonprofit’s Morris Plains office at 3 Executive Drive. Entry fee: $25. For details, contact Joann McEniry at 973-285-0006.
The Morristown Festival on the Green welcomes autumn with its annual celebration of downtown Morristown. Music, food, games and more promise colorful fun for all ages, courtesy of the Morristown Partnership. From noon to 5 pm at the historic Morristown Green. Entertainment includes the 26-piece Morris Plains Community Band, which will perform for 90 minutes on the Green starting at noon.
Hungarian pianist Peter Toth gives his sixth and final concert honoring the centennial of the National Park Service, at 1 pm at Washington’s Headquarters Museum, 30 Washington Place, Morristown. Admission: Free. The program will feature works by Brahms, Bartok, and Liszt, on the park’s 1873 Steinway Grand piano.
