Morris Township police advised that West Hanover Avenue was closed between Burnham and Ketch roads on Saturday evening because of downed power lines. They recommended Sussex Avenue as an alternate route.

Likewise, Western Avenue was closed between Miller Street and Searing Avenue for the same reason.

More than 7,000 Township customers lost power during the afternoon thunderstorm; within three hours, all but 1,000 had their electricity restored, Township officials said.

“Our Department of Public Works continue to assist with the removal of trees from roadways.  The Morris Township Committee,  Office of Emergency Management, Fire, Police and Administration will continue to monitor and work with JCP&L in the restoration effort,” the Township said in a message to residents.

As of 10 pm, Jersey Central Power and Light reported that 870 customers still lacked power in the Township. Some 402 customers were out in Morristown, and 180 remained in the dark in Morris Plains.

Township officials reminded residents to call 1-888-LIGHTSS (1-888-544-4877) or report an outage via text or online.

The utility warned customers to avoid downed wires, even if they don’t appear to be carrying electricity.

“Extra caution should be used in areas where downed wires are tangled with trees or other debris,” the Township said. Report downed wires immediately to JCP&L or call Morris Township Police at 973-539-0777. In case of an emergency, call 911.

  1. Still no power in the greater Western Ave area. At least at 1am, 10 hours after it went out, the JCP&L Outage Map on their website finally acknowledged the outage and sometime overnight gave it the restoration estimate of 3pm today which would make it a full 24 hours. I give JCP&L a lot of credit for the way they’ve handled the damage to the last several storms, and I don’t fault them for not initially giving any restoration estimates when the damage is really bad. But it’s pretty annoying to look on the Outage Map, 9 hours after your power went out, and have it still try to convince you that nothing’s wrong.
