Morris Township opens cooling center; avoid these roads

As Jersey Central Power & Light works to restore electricity to 1,600 Morris Township customers affected by Thursday’s storm, the township is opening its municipal building as a station for cooling off and recharging phones and electronic devices.

Morris Township police logoThe building at 50 Woodland Ave. will be open from 8 am to 8 pm today, Friday, July 15, 2016.

Temperatures should top 9o degrees, according to the National Weather Service.  The state has issued an air quality alert; the very young, the elderly and anyone with respiratory problems are advised to avoid outdoor exertion.

JCP&L has predicted power will be restored by 11:30 pm here and in neighboring Morristown, which opened two cooling centers on Thursday to help nearly 3,500 affected customers.

UPDATE: As of Friday morning, JCP&L reports 1,209 Township customers (14 percent of total customers in the municipality) remain without electricity. The figure is 2,745 customers (27 percent) in Morristown.

Township police, meanwhile, report that traffic signals are out at the intersections of Columbia Road and Park Avenue, and Columbia and Normandy Parkway.

And Ridgedale Avenue is closed at John Street. Motorists should plan alternate routes, police said.
