Video: A veteran of Afghanistan and Iraq on why we must remember
By Kevin Coughlin
Why do we celebrate Memorial Day? Give Army Lt. Col. Edward Croot 11 minutes of your holiday weekend, for a powerful reminder.
The West Morris Central High School graduate has served in Iraq, and in Afghanistan. At this May 25, 2016, ceremony hosted by the Morris County Freeholders in Morristown, Croot remembered Cpl. Jamie Smith, a high school classmate killed while serving in Somalia, and Paul Sweeney of Rochelle Park, a fellow soldier who died in Afghanistan.
“It’s on these days, Memorial Day, that it’s important … that we remember that each one of these service members that’s ever given their life has a story,” Croot said, choking back his emotions.
“So please, on Memorial Day, remember those that didn’t come home.”
