FREEHOLDERS HONOR MORRISTOWN HIGH SCHOOL

AND DELBARTON SCHOOL STATE CHAMPION ICE HOCKEY TEAMS

The Morris County Board of Freeholders honored two Morris County high school hockey teams this week for their great success on the ice this season, both winning 2016 state championships in March.

Players and coaches from Morristown High School and the Delbarton School were honored by the county governing board, which on Wednesday evening issued resolutions of congratulations to both schools and certificates to the players on both teams.

Morristown ice hockey coach Bobby Jones and Delbarton team captain Andrew Petrillo, joined by players from both teams, were on hand to accept the resolutions for the two schools, which are located just a few miles from each other – but are in separate leagues and do not play each other.

“The freeholders and all residents of Morris County are extremely proud of your success, which reflects highly on the hard work and dedication you put into this season,’’ Deputy Freeholder Director Hank Lyon told the players and coaches during a special ceremony at the freeholders’ meeting in Morristown.

“It takes a remarkable discipline and spirit to get to this level, to overcome opponents who stood in the way of your success, and who were not about to let your earn your championships without hard fought battles. It is amazing to have two state champs from our county. We congratulate you,’’ added Freeholder Doug Cabana.

Morristown High School won its second state ice hockey championship on March 9 at the Prudential Center in Newark. They beat Randolph High School 2-0 to win the NJSIAA Public “A’’ State Ice Hockey Championship. They earned their title match with Randolph by defeating Morris Knolls (4-1) and Ridge (3-1) in earlier playoff rounds.

For the Delbarton School, it was their unprecedented 11th state title. They beat Christian Brothers Academy 3-1 on March 7, also at the Prudential Center, to win the NJSIAA Non-Public State Ice Hockey Championship. Their earlier round victories were over St. Peter’s Prep (5-2) and St. Augustine Prep (5-0).
