Gov. Christie returned on Friday from campaigning in New Hampshire to declare a state of emergency in New Jersey, ahead of Winter Storm Jonas.

And NJ Transit announced that it’s suspending all service statewide as of 2 am Saturday, Jan. 23, 2016.

While most parts of the state can expect between one- and two feet of snow, the governor said, he does not anticipate any evacuations at the Shore from anticipated coastal flooding. The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning for central and southern counties.

“The overall message is: We’ll get throughout the storm, we always do. That’s how we do it in New Jersey,” said Christie, facing his 17th snow emergency as governor.

NJ Transit service will resume “as quickly as possible,” according to a statement from the agency. Federal inspections will be required to restore rail operations.

“The safety of our customers, employees and citizens remains our top priority at NJ Transit,” NJ Transit interim Executive Director Dennis J. Martin said in a statement.

“By suspending service, this will allow us to take the necessary actions to protect the system then quickly and safely resume services when conditions warrant.”

Patrol trains will continue running, to clear switches and overhead power wires clear of snow and ice. NJ Transit will continue cross-honoring tickets and passes on bus, rail, light rail and private bus carrier services through Sunday, Jan. 24, 2016, if operations resume by then. That time frame could be extended, the agency indicated.

Updates will be posted at njtransit.com, and at 973-275-5555.
