In the wake of weekend raids by federal agents targeting undocumented immigrants from Central America, a Morristown-based advocacy group has scheduled “Know Your Rights” community forums this week.
Wind of the Spirit will hold talks at St. Margaret’s Church in Morristown on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2016, and Saturday, Jan. 9, a 8 pm. The church is at 6 Sussex Ave.
Forums also are planned for 6 pm and 8 pm on Friday, Jan. 7, at the Wind of the Spirit Community Center, at 120 Speedwell Ave.
“I’m extremely worried for the whole immigrant community who are in constant fear and have not been able to adjust their status and live in peace and security,” said Wind of the Spirit’s Ruby Soto, in a statement.
Over the weekend, federal authorities rounded up 121 people in North Carolina, Georgia and Texas for deportation, according to the federal Department of Homeland Security.
These raids keyed on recent arrivals from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, countries torn by drug cartel violence, reported USA Today.
The Wind of the Spirit forums will discuss basic rights that immigrants should know when interacting with federal immigration agents.
These additional forums are planned:
Pompton Lakes:
Sunday, Jan. 10 at 10am, St. Mary’s Church, 17 Pompton Ave.
