Rip-off or coincidence? M&Ms ad looks an awful lot like local filmmaker’s video

Two videos side by side: You decide

Have M&Ms taken a bite out of a local filmmaker?

Last year, Ryan Taylor entered the Doritos Crash the Super Bowl Contest.  While his video ad did not win, it did land on national TV — as an M&Ms ad.

Taylor says it was stolen, scene-for-scene, and he’s placed the ads side-by-side in this video smack-down.

What do you think?  Time to switch to Reese’s Pieces?

MorristownGreen.com readers may know Taylor from his years working at Marty’s Reliable Cycle, or for his efforts co-organizing the All Howl’s Eve Dog Parade and Costume Contest in Morristown.

His first video, about Junebug, his wacky pit bull, got such a favorable response at our 2013 MorristownGreen.com Film Festival that he decided to keep shooting.

Readers also may recognize Taylor’s female star, Ashley Cook, owner of the local Viva La Pet service.  And there is a cameo appearance by Mark Ehrenkranz, the Morristown impresario of the New York Film Critics Series. He plays the dad in Taylor’s Doritos ad.

The Omnicom Group’s BBDO ad agency has represented Doritos and M&Ms.
