Video: Tom Paxton sings ‘The Last Thing on My Mind’

By Kevin Coughlin

You may not know him. But chances are, you know his song.

The Last Thing on My Mind has been covered by numerous stars over the last 50 years: Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, Peter, Paul & Mary; John Denver, Doc Watson, Rick Danko, Joan Baez and Judy Collins, to name a few.

Here is Tom Paxton trying on his own song for size, recorded in Chatham at last weekend’s 40th anniversary of  The Minstrel Acoustic Concert Series.

Paxton, 77, is retiring from touring after decades on the road, so he may not get too many more chances to sing this one on stage.  He spoke with us about songwriting, Pete Seeger and his early days with Bob Dylan; you can hear the interview here:

  1. Love the audience singing along so well and harmonizing a little. He’s 77?!? Yowza. He doesn’t look it or sound it.
