The Morris County Sheriff’s Office arrested 76 people last week for nonpayment of child support, and collected $56,000 in back payments, leading all counties state-wide, according to Sheriff Ed Rochford.

The arrests were part of a sweep coordinated by the N.J. State Judiciary and the Sheriff’s Association of New Jersey.

Morris County has the state’s first nationally accredited sheriff’s office, according to the sheriff, who has been embroiled in a dispute with the Morris freeholders over control of the Morris County Jail in Morris Township.

  1. But it is not only illegal but morally and ethically wrong to not pay to support your children Mr. Clark. Mr. Clark you are as bad as a deadbeat dad for not supporting Melina and any of the other single parent moms who get nothing from their ex-husbands or children’s fathers to help raise their children. My ex is over $200,000 in child support arrears and a fugitive as we speak. The threat of jailing a man for not supporting his children is not “illegal”. And all deadbeats have the option of paying the court ordered support to avoid going to jail.

  2. To my knowledge the judicial system is, supposed to be “all about the children”. Well, in my case it’s not. It’s all about the father, who owes thousands of dollars, owns his own business and hides his cash, spends money like its water, has no place to take his children on his every other weekend and his one overnight during the week, and doesn’t have the expenses that his ex wive has because she has her kids 24/7. And, he actually has been court ordered, 3 separate times in the passed 4 years to pay not only his normal payment, on time but an extra $280.00 per month towards his arrears. If he doesn’t make the payment each month, a warrant is to be put out on him. Well, I’ve been given every excuse as to why he can’t pay his court ordered payment on time. I’ve actually been told by probation that I was lucky I got something. And, there has never been a warrant put out. I have begged him to please just do what you are responsible to do and he doesn’t care. He goes on vacation every year with his girlfriend and will throw my kids a $50 here and there and once in a while he’ll by them dinner. Awesome. Great dad. But, mom, puts the roof over there heads, feeds them and gives them all or most of their needs. Pays for her bills, and helps pay her daughters car payment, pays for the children’s medical insurance, co pays and prescriptions. And, now trying to get her daughter the proper funds for college, because daddy doesn’t want to waste his money on college.
Getting denied, because she doesn’t make enough to co sign and of course, cannot get the loan herself. So, what kind of dad is that? May I ask? Should he be put in jail for non payment? Or, just because he owns his own business, and claims he makes no money, his pay cannot be garnished. That’s pretty sad. If someone’s business, after 5 years wasn’t making any money; wouldn’t you think it’s time to get a real job!! Of course not. He can’t hide his money and then they will take up his pay. So, this Dad, has been taught ,very well, how to beat the system. But, in the meantime, Mom struggles to figure out a way to get money to pay for college. But, I will not give up and no I will not join your fight to stop putting dead beat dads in jail. And, I only wish our sheriff would dig deeper for these fathers that really get away with taking care of their children.

  3. It is illegal to jail people for owing debt in America. This includes child support debt. It is time to reform the child support system in America. Join the fight!
