A contractor hit a gas line on South Street early on Tuesday, prompting evacuation of some residents from the 40 Park condos as a precaution, said a spokesperson for Public Service Electric & Gas.

The call came as Morristown firefighters were busy battling a house fire around the corner on Pine Street.

PSE&G was contacted about the gas leak at 1 am on July 14, 2015. Police already were on the scene, in front of 5 South St., said Karen Johnson of PSE&G.

Police closed South Street and the utility shut off gas service while repairs were made. Residents were allowed to re-enter their condos at 2:10 am, Johnson said.

Contractor J. Fletcher Creamer & Son, which was not working for PSE&G, struck the gas line   outside of the Iron Bar and the Barre3 fitness studio, the spokeswoman said.
