Suspect arrested in 2014 armed robbery at Morristown Medical Center

East Orange police have arrested a man suspected of robbing an employee of Morristown Medical Center at gunpoint last spring, according to a joint statement on Friday from Morris County Prosecutor Fredric Knapp and Morristown Police Chief Pete Demnitz.

prosecutor logoTyhan Lighty, 43, was arrested on a warrant stemming from the May 18, 2014, incident, in which he allegedly entered a parking lot office, demanded money, and fled on foor. Lighty’s last known address was Orange.

Last month, before Lighty was apprehended, Superior Court Judge James DeMarzo  authorized charges of robbery and unlawful weapons possession against him.  Lighty is being held in the Morris County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bail, with no 10 percent cash option, as ordered by Superior Court Judge Stephen J. Taylor.

ARREST MADE IN CONNECTION WITH THE MAY 2014 ARMED ROBBERY AT THE MORRISTOWN MEDICAL CENTER

Morris County Prosecutor Fredric M. Knapp and Morristown Police Chief Peter Demnitz announce the arrest of Tyhan Lighty, age 43, with a last known address in Orange, New Jersey, in connection with an armed robbery that occurred on May 18, 2014, in the parking garage of the Morristown Medical Center complex on Madison Avenue in Morristown.

On June 18, 2015, Tyhan Lighty was arrested by officers with the East Orange Police Department on the outstanding warrant related to this incident. He was later transferred to the custody of detectives with the Major Crimes Unit of the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office and the Morristown Police Department.

On May 4, 2015, the Honorable James DeMarzo, J.S.C. authorized charges against Lighty for various crimes related to this incident, including Robbery (first degree), Unlawful Possession of a Weapon (second degree), Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose (second degree), and Certain Persons Not to Have Weapons (second degree).

At the time, Lighty’s whereabouts were unknown. After Lighty’s arrest, bail was set by the Honorable Stephen J. Taylor, P.J.Cr. at $250,000 without a ten percent option. Lighty was lodged in the Morris County Correctional Facility.

The arrest is the result of an incident that occurred on May 18, 2014, at approximately 10:53 a.m., when the Morristown Police Department was contacted regarding an armed robbery in the parking garage of the Morristown Medical Center. Information revealed that a male who was armed with a handgun entered a parking lot complex office and demanded money from an employee. The suspect then fled the location.

Numerous law enforcement agencies took part in the investigation into this matter, including the Major Crimes Unit of the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, the Morristown Police Department and the Morris County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Section.

The charges and allegations contained in the complaint are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
