A Chester man has been charged in connection with a hit-and-run accident after turning himself in to Mendham Township police.

Christopher Andrews, 42, came to police headquarters on Monday night, one day after a tailgating Mercedes struck a westbound Audi on Tempe Wick Road in the Morristown National Historical Park, sending the Audi off the road and injuring both occupants.

Ross Johnson, has been charged with two counts of assault by auto, leaving the scene of an accident, failing to render aid and numerous motor vehicle charges including reckless driving. He was released pending an appearance in Morris County Superior Court on June 10, 2015.

Accident victims Raouf Al-Bahrani, 53, and Dema Hilmi, 42, of Mendham were treated at Morristown Medical Center for moderate injuries that are not considered life-threatening, Lt. Johnson reported.

After being “excessively tailgated,” they were struck from behind at 10:15 pm on Sunday, May 31, as they were driving towards Leddell Road in Mendham Township, the officer said.

Their Audi went off the road, then rolled over back onto the roadway, according to police.

A Mercedes emblem and pieces of that vehicle’s grill and headlight assembly were found at the scene, police reported.

Lt. Johnson thanked the public for its help in this case, adding: “The accident investigation is on-going, however there is no indication at this time that this was a premeditated event.”
