From the Sussex Avenue School

The Sussex Avenue School recently completed a spring reading challenge called the Tower of Books.

Students had six weeks to read 30 texts from a variety of genres in fiction and nonfiction. They were asked to keep a reading log of the books they had read.

In addition, students created a template of a tower, which was placed on their lockers. When students read a book, they placed a book spine template on their tower to display what they had read. Sussex had almost 100 students participate. However, a handful successfully completed the challenge.

Students who read past the 30 required texts were asked to read chapter books only and log those additional books on another reading log.

We had three voracious readers who took prizes. Our first place reader was Dillon Walker. He read 47 books. In second place was Kate Siegel. She read 45 books. In third place was Emma Siegel. She read 42 books.

This is the second year for the reading challenge at Sussex. This program is provided for by the Sussex Avenue School Home and School Association and Ms. Christine Kelly, the school media specialist.
