When I was in high school it seemed like the only things I was good at were getting into trouble and making people uncomfortable. Then I was assigned a senior theater project. I had to write a 20-minute monologue as a famous person and then perform it. I picked Marilyn Monroe because I thought it would be easy. Back in those days, my life was soooooo hard that anything easy was the direction I would go in. It turned out to be one of the most profound experiences of my life.
Sure I was in theater. But I only ever got cast as a pretty girl who danced across the stage. So, all of a sudden I was transforming myself into Marilyn Monroe, and telling a story that I wrote. The things I learned about her made me realize that I wasn’t the only lonely, sad, misunderstood person on the planet. I wasn’t alone. I performed my soul that day. My performance had people in the audience, who beat me up on a regular basis, crying. I had found my calling and I’ve been telling my stories in one form or another ever since…xoK
