Iron Bar owner Jimmy Cavanaugh may be at war with officials in Morristown. But they appear to love him in Essex County.

The former Essex freeholder recently was named Man of the Year by the Giblin Association, a charitable organization founded in 1954 by the late state Sen. John Giblin.

Cavanaugh, who was honored at Caldwell University, received congratulatory proclamations from the city of Newark, the Essex freeholders and the state legislature.

In June he is scheduled to return to Newark — where his lawsuit against Morristown is set to be heard by an administrative law judge. Cavanaugh is suing to overturn conditions imposed on his expansion of the Iron Bar into an adjacent space he calls the Iron Bistro.

Morristown restaurateur JAMES A. CAVANAUGH 2015 Man of The Year

The Giblin Association, an Essex County-based civic and charitable organization, recently sponsored its 61st Anniversary Cocktail Party at the Caldwell University Student Center. James A. Cavanaugh, owner of Morristown’s Iron Bar, was named Man of The Year.

Founded by the late state Senator John Giblin in 1954, the Giblin Association supports a wide-variety of civic, cultural and community organizations throughout the state. Proceeds from the celebration will be utilized to continue the organization’s mission.

Cavanaugh, resident of Chester, NJ, has had a varied career in the public service, construction industry, and the restaurant business. He was cited with commendations by the City of Newark, County of Essex and the NJ State legislature.

Cavanaugh served for nine years as an Essex County Freeholder-At-Large from 1987 to 1996. He additionally served as a member of the Caldwell Zoning Board, as well the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority Executive Board. In his Construction work, he started Phoenix Contractors and Developers in 1969 and built it into a multi-million dollar heavy construction company serving both public and private sectors together with a real estate development company specializing in Brownfield Development.

Currently, he is the proprietor of the Iron Bar in Morristown, NJ that is listed as the No. 1 nightspot and sports bar by Inside New Jersey lifestyle magazine. He was inducted into the Essex County Democratic Committee Hall of Fame in 2010 and was honored as the Grand Marshal of the Nutley Saint Patrick’s Parade in 1996.

The Standard-bearer of the Giblin Association is Thomas P. Giblin of Montclair. Giblin is the New Jersey Assemblyman from the 34th Legislative District. He is also the President of the Essex-West Hudson Labor Council, AFL-CIO.
