Parade Day was almost a walk in the park, crime-wise, compared with last year in Morristown.

Arrests were down by more than half. Fewer people were caught with their pants down, and fewer landed in the hospital.

Police made 16 arrests, issued 30 tickets and responded to six motor vehicle crashes between 7 am on Saturday, March 14, 2015, and 4 am on March 15, according to Lt. Stuart Greer of the Morristown police.

Nineteen of the summonses were for drinking in public; eight were for public urination, a ticket that carries a $500 fine upon conviction.  Seven arrests were for disorderly conduct.

Eighteen people were transported to hospitals; EMT personnel responded to 25 calls, of which nine involved intoxicated persons, reported Capt. Meila of the Morristown Emergency Medical Services.

Every year the Morris County St. Patrick’s Parade — an alcohol-free event– draws large crowds to Morristown, and traditionally, many spectators visit the town’s taverns and bars before or after the event. Rain thinned the crowd considerably on Saturday, however.

Last year, when the weather was better, police and ambulance crews had a busier time on Parade Day:

Police arrested 29 persons and issued 34 tickets, 27 people were transported to hospitals, and there were eight motor vehicle crashes in 2014. Of those arrested last year, 11 were charged with disorderly conduct and nine were charged with defiant trespassing. Ambulance crews answered 36 calls, and treated 21 people for intoxication.

Tickets for local ordinance violations included 19 for drinking in public and 15 for public urination a year ago.

The high-water mark in recent times was 2011, when 46 tickets were issued for peeing in public. That year, police wrote a total of 135 summonses, including 88 for drinking in public.

Morristown’s Emergency Medical Services were assisted on Saturday by EMTs from Chester, Florham Park,
Mendham, Mendham Township, New Vernon, Pequannock, Randolph, the Morris Minute Men and the Morris County Office of Emergency Management.

Police from numerous towns and the Morris County Sheriff’s Office also assisted.

Lt. Greer declined to speculate on what factors accounted for this year’s apparent decrease in rowdy behavior.
