Morristown High, defending state hockey crown, advances in playoffs

Morristown High School, last year’s state hockey champion, got its title defense off to a good start this week with a 5-2 victory over Monroe in the first round of the state Public A tournament.

The Colonials (12-11-3), who are seeded sixth, will face 11th-seeded Montgomery Township on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2015, at 6:15 pm at Mennen Arena in Morris Township.

Jakob DeFares scored a hat trick in the victory against Monroe at Mennen Arena.

Evan Szary, who took over in goal this season when senior Shane Brown departed to play for a junior team, was solid between the pipes.

Montgomery advanced with an 8-1 win against South Brunswick this week.

Morristown players fared well in this season’s All-Star voting by coaches of the Mennen Division.

Forward Bradley Greik was named a First Team All-Star. Defenseman Kyle Beyer was a Second Team pick, and Cole Shandlay rated an Honorable Mention.  Goalie Evan Szary received the Terry Maguire Rookie of the Year award.

The Edward Halvorsen Most Valuable Player trophy went to Morristown-Beard defenseman James Callahan, a First Team All-Star.

In the state Non-Public tournament, perennial powerhouse Delbarton of Morris Township is the team to beat. The No. 1 seeded Green Wave, which had a bye in the opening round, faces off against 17th-ranked Paramus Catholic on Thursday.

Sixth-seeded Morristown-Beard, which also had a bye, takes on 11th-ranked Red Bank Catholic on Thursday.
