Bishop John Shelby Spong will discuss The Fourth Gospel — Tales of a Jewish Mystic, at the Adult Forum of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Morristown from Dec. 28, 2014, through Jan. 25, 2015.

Considered one of America’s best-known spokespersons for an open, scholarly Christianity, Bishop Spong is a deeply committed Christian speaking as an informed citizen of the 21st century.

Bishop Spong presents more than 100 lectures a year, worldwide, and his 26 books together have sold more than a million copies. He has appeared many times on national TV on shows such as Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher and The O’Reilly Factor and has been featured on CBS’s Sixty Minutes.

Bishop Spong has studied at major centers of Christian Scholarship, including the Union Theological Seminary in New York, Yale Divinity School, Harvard Divinity School and the universities of Cambridge, Oxford and Edinburgh.  He also has taught at Drew University in Madison, among other schools.

The retired bishop was named the Quartercentenary Scholar at Cambridge University in 1992, and the William Belden Noble Lecturer at Harvard University in 2000.

Morehouse College in Atlanta hung Bishop Spong’s portrait in the school’s Hall of Honor, alongside other noted civil rights leaders.

He was named Humanist of the Year in 1999.

Since 2001 he has written a weekly Internet column for EverydayHealth.com and the Center for Progressive Christianity.

His hour-long lectures will begin promptly at 10 am, in the Parish Hall at the corner of Miller Road and Maple Avenue.  The schedule:
