As concession statements go, this one did not impress the victor very much.

Morris Township Committeewoman-elect Louise Johnson took exception on Monday to part of Committeeman Jeff Grayzel’s announcement that he would not pursue a fourth challenge to his 14-vote loss.

While the outbound Democrat wished the Republican newcomer well on Sunday, he added that his Nov. 4 defeat “means half of the voters have lost representation in which they have confidence. Further, the Township Committee now has a 5-0 Republican hold and does not reflect the composition of our local electorate.”

Johnson begs to differ.

“Jeff’s statement that I, or any member of the Township Committee, won’t represent the entire township is just plain wrong,” she said via email on Monday.

“Yes, the campaign was political, but public service and charitable acts don’t work that way. Do firemen and police ask about a person’s party affiliation before they come to their rescue? Of course not.”

Johnson said she never cared about anyone’s politics when fundraising for need-based scholarships, teaching Sunday school or volunteering at the food pantry.

“I plan to be out there working for all the residents in Morris Township, my home town for almost 30 years,” she said.

  1. A recount by statute requires a deposit of $25 per district. This will be refunded if significant discrepancies appear. The total amount of money involved is far less than most serious candidates spend on their campaigns.

  2. The people have spoken, so enough already. Grayzel’s parting shots are less than gracious, and I wonder who covered the costs associated with the multiple recounts? Ego maniacs running wild.
