D. Jason Bishop has a good thing going at Drew University. When his secret gets out, the Madison school may have to add another couple of balconies to its cozy concert hall.

The assistant professor of music conducts the Drew University Chorale and the Drew Choral Union, an 87-voice ensemble that includes students, faculty members and singers from the community.

Together, they gave a soaring performance of Handel’s Messiah last weekend.  The program began with some shorter selections of “Music for the Season.”  Video clips are included here.

Bishop, a native of Tennessee, earned music degrees from the University of Oklahoma, Boston University and Rhodes College in Memphis. He served as Director of Choral Activities at Penn State Erie from and  Music Director of the Erie Philharmonic Chorus prior to joining the Drew faculty.

Whenever he joins the chorus, it’s as a “counter-tenor,” which he described in a Drew publication as “a cultivated falsetto” ideal for Renaissance and Baroque pieces.
