Board games, it seems, have been around since the invention of boards.

(When the Pharaohs played Operation and declared “Remove Funnybone!,”  they meant business!)

Did you know that Chutes and Ladders originated in India, as Snakes and Ladders?  Or that The Game of Life started as The Checkered Game of Life, just before the Civil War?

These are a few of the fun facts from the board game exhibit at the Morristown & Township Library, where intrepid gamers gathered on Saturday for friendly rounds of backgammon, Candy Land and more.

Library staffers Chad Leinaweaver and Joanne Fattrosso, as well as library patrons, shared many games from their personal collections, to celebrate the American Library Association’s seventh annual International Games Day @ the Library.

Among the participants were Myles Johnson Senior and Junior, who were exploring Blokus and Qwirkle, respectively.  Board games are popular in their Morristown home, said the dad, though “sometimes the rules change in the middle of the game.”

Which reminded us of holidays rent asunder by ferocious Parcheesi battles. For the sake of family peace and harmony, we will be asking Santa this year for the Mad Magazine Game — where the object is to lose.
