Senior Jordan Sets Record with Seven Touchdowns in 51-20 Victory at Chatham

Here’s how the action unfolded:

Jordan Powell, supported by a strong showing from the entire Colonials squad, swarms the Cougars from the first series.

Following a 10 yard sack by Anton Buchner and Alexis Villegas, Ryan Wilson gets his first Varsity interception and runs the ball down to the Cougar 20 yard line. Unfortunately the Colonials offense fails to exploit this turnover as the Cougar defense forces a fumble, which is run back 80 yards for the first score. The Cougars lead for the only time in the game, 6-0.

As in many games this year, the outstanding leadership in Captains Anton Buchner, Cody Heaton, Jordan Powell,  Alexis Villegas and Seniors Treyshawn Gwynn, Khair Benbow, Dallas McCall,  Andrew Benvenuto, Isiah Pinnock, Ryan Wilson, Shakeem Benbow and Roshawn Morris get the Colonials back to the task at hand.

On the first play after the Cougars kickoff, Jordan Powell runs a bubble screen pass 80 yards for the first of seven TDs.

On the ensuing kickoff, Ethan Bolson exploits an open part of the Cougars return team to place a perfect kick that speedster Cody Heaton recovers on the Chatham 3 yard line. However, the Cougars defense stiffens here and forces the Colonials to settle for a field goal. It’s 10-6 with just minutes off the clock.

On the next series, Ryan Wilson and Anton Buchner begin their game-long torture of the Cougars as Wilson swats away a pass, and Buchner sacks the Cougars QB for a 10 yard loss to stop Chatham cold. And it is! Cold that is.

The Colonials Air Force sets to work on its own 20. Justin Burke has his own game-long duel that will overwhelm his defensive counterparts for a key first down. Then Dallas McCall scrambles for a first. At midfield, Dallas floats a long pass to Powell –who is all alone due to blown coverage — and it’s 17-6, Colonials.

Even though it feels like the Morristown Air Force has air supremacy in the skies above Chatham, the Cougars stay in the game with another score to make it 17-13.

In the next series the Colonials show the fans more of the right stuff. Cody Heaton makes a key third and long reception for a first down. Two plays later it’s third and 20. With Dallas McCall scrambling in his backfield to extend the play, he finds Cody Heaton again for a 30 yard bomb down to the Cougar 5 yard line. Next play, Jordan Powell racks up another TD. It’s 23-13 Colonials.

Ethan Bolson keeps the Cougars bottled up for the next couple of series as Alexis Villegas, Shakeem Benbow, Matthew Napoleon smother any attempt at a ground attack.

Sophomore stars Jesse Unger and Justin Burke pummel the Chathman defenders. The Cougars will score again for the last time in the game just before the half. With six seconds in the half, Jordan Powell glides in for another TD to make it 30-20.

In the second half, Andrew Benvenuto starts the Motown Defense off with a blocked pass, which forces Chatham to three-and-out. The Colonials get the ball on the 41 and start to drive. Another Sophomore, Jesse Unger, crashes through the Cougars for a key first down. McCall scrambles for more yardage and another first. Jordan Powell spins and glides in for another TD.

In the next series Andrew Benvenuto gets an OSKIE assisted by a Sami Cazimoski tip drill. The Colonials stumble on offense and punt, but Benvenuto is back again with another interception.

Powell will score again, and on the next defensive series Cazimoski strikes again with a fumble recovery on a punt.

Ryan Wilson picks up his second interception of the game, and then nearly another. From here Powell will score once more. Final: 51-20. It’s a great show for all the parents and fans.

The Colonials (4-5) play their final game at Kearny, on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014.
