Area photo buffs were saddened late last year when Sandrian Camera announced it was closing its doors after 87 years in town.

But this cloud has a silver lining–or more precisely, a silver halide lining.

Next month, the storefront officially will re-open as the 70 South Gallery.  Just as the Sandrians hinted in July,  the place will be transformed into a combination high-end print shop and gallery/ event space.

“We will feature student, amateur, and professional artwork (available for purchase), as well as provide complete photography processing services,” new owner Ted Baldanzi said in a statement on Monday.

“From developing your regular photos, to special surface printing (canvas, metal, fine art papers), to restoring and digitizing old photos and videos, we hope you come in and support a local business that is giving back to the community through education and events.”

A grand opening on Oct. 11, 2o14, is scheduled to include raffles, giveaways, gift certificates and a caricature artist.

The gallery’s mission, according to Baldanzi, is “to support photographers (both amateurs and professionals) by providing a central location where they can collaborate, admire and share their work with each other.

“Photographers of all kinds have the opportunity to exhibit their photographs, while art-lovers and collectors have the opportunity to own original and remarkable photographic art.”

Another plus: Some of the friendly Sandrian staff are remaining at 70 South.

Tis the season for makeovers on South Street. The Vail Mansion and C’est Cheese also have undergone major transformations in recent weeks.
