The Colonials freshman football team set the tone for the 2014 season with a 30-6 win over Montville on opening weekend.

Here’s how the game went:

Drew Chilson kickoff starts the season for the Frosh. Jhamil King makes the first tackle of his High School career on the first play, followed by a classic open field tackle by Drew Chilson, then on 3rd and 8, King sacks the QB for a 4-yard loss. This marks high water for the Montville freshmen.

Next play, Montville punts, King fields the low kick, swings left, evades a Mustang headhunter, gets several key blocks, them smokes the rest of the Mustangs for a 45- yard TD, on King’s first return and touchdown as a Morristown Colonial.

The next series, on 3rd and 4, Montville is again stopped at mid-field as Gary Smith fights through a power sweep to stop the Mustangs short of the first down. The Mustangs punt with no return and the Frosh offense takes the field for the first time.

Yhylmoni Fable at QB gains 11 on his first play from scrimmage, then gains 20 yards on the next play. Chilson blasts through several defenders for a key 1st down. Next play, King goes off left tackle, spins, dodges and runs over a defender to score from the 35 yard line. It’s 14-0 Colonials.

On the next series, Jake Buchner throws the QB for an 8- yard loss. Gary Smith and Kristian Dimogerodakis stop the Mustangs on another key 3rd down. On the next play, King picks up a fumble and runs in the ball. It’s 22-0 at the half.

Chilson starts the second half by running over, by and through several defenders for a 36-yard return to the Mustangs’ 48 yard line. Two plays later, King is in the end zone again, 30 -0. On the next Mustangs possession, Buchner stops the drive on a 3rd and 7 by dragging down the QB for a loss.

These are the Frosh who went all the way to the Suburban League Super Bowl last year. These boys played like veterans and they are very well coached. Final score: 30-6.

Morristown’s VARSITY shows poise in opening day 55-8 win at Memorial Field.

Morristown Seniors Anton Buchner, Cody Heaton, Jordan Powell and Alex Villegas take the Unity walk to mid-field for the coin toss. As the Frosh start the first of many games this weekend, the Seniors are down to their last season.

The Colonials win the toss, but fumble the ball on kickoff deep in Colonials territory. The Mustangs run the ball into the end zone one play later, then go for two on a trick play from an offset position. With less than 30 seconds off the clock, it’s 0-8, Montville.

That was the last the Colonials fans saw of Montville. On the first play after the kickoff, QB Dallas McCall hits Powell on a 65-yard strike. Apparently the Colonials have a few trick plays, too, as place-kicker Ethan Bolson runs in the extra point for 2. With 1:08 played, both teams have scored.

On the next series, senior Ryan Wilson recovers a fumble deep in Colonials territory to save a score. There have been 5 fumbles in 7 minutes.

Later in the series, Treyshawn Gwynn gets a key 1st down on 4th-and-2 on the Colonials’ own 40. It’s a gutsy and brilliant call. Next play, Ricky Lorenzo catches a McCall pass for 60 yards down to the Montville 10 yard line. Lorenzo is like a stealth fighter, small and fast, and by the time the defense figures out he’s invaded, it’s too late.

Next play, Powell in his easy gliding style, slips over left tackle. This time Bolson decides to kick the PAT, making it 15-8, Colonials.

The Morristown Senior Leadership was in complete control from the start. The Mustangs taste the angry swarm compliments of : Andrew Benvenuto , Devontae Jonah, Matthew Napoleon , Justin Burke and Allexis Villegas.

Then, on the Colonials 25, Andrew Fried recovers the first of two key fumbles and the offense goes to work again.

Jessee Unger and Treyshawn wow the fans with great displays of hard-nosed running, compliments of the bulldozers upfront: Villegas, Napoleon, Theodore Vogtman and Samari Robinson; which sets up another Lorenzo stealth score.

It’s 34 – 8 at the half. The Montville Mustangs, to their credit, never give up. Khair Pettiway scores on another beautiful McCall pass. Then more swarming defense stifles a Montville response.

Fried picks up his second fumble recovery. Justin Burke runs in his second “oskie” of the day for a Colonials touchdown.

With seconds left in the game, it’s 55-8. The Colonials have treated our guests to the angry swarm. And then, with just under 2 minutes to go in the game, the Mack Truck shows up: Sami Cazimoski demonstrates a perfect form tackle that all football fans know as the “ohhh!!”

Coach Chris Hull comments: “Our prep team was the key factor to our victory and prepared us all week for Montville’s offense and defense.”

Offensive Statistics Leaders:

McCall 9/14, 297 yrds, 2 TDs

Powell 112 rec. yrds, 4/22 rush, 2TDs

Lorenzo 90 rec yrds 2 Tds

Unger 7/44 rush

Gwyn 5/26 rush

On Friday, Sept. 19, the Colonials travel to Randolph to take on the Rams at 7 pm.
