The IZOD Arena was a busy place on Tuesday, when more than 3,100 graduates received their degrees from Fairleigh Dickinson University.

Rachel Robinson, widow of baseball legend Jackie Robinson, received an honorary degree, as did best-selling author Joyce Carol Oates and FDU alumnus Sung-Mo “Steve” Kang, president of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology.

If FDU’s 71st annual commencement had an international feeling, it was with good reason: Students from 72 countries participated, according to the school, which has campuses in Madison, Teaneck, Vancouver and rural England.

Forty states also were represented.
