For the third time in a month, a pedestrian in a Morristown crosswalk has been struck by a car, police reported.
Monday’s victim, who was hit shortly after noon on Spring Street approaching Martin Luther King Avenue, complained of pain and was taken to Morristown Medical Center’s emergency room as a precaution, said Lt. Stuart Greer.
Officer Don Chaudruc’s investigation determined that Belia Escobar-Monterruso, 51, of Morris Township, was in a marked crosswalk when she was struck by a 2012 Hyundai driven by 24-year-old Elizabeth Callow of Morristown.
The motorist told police that she was turning onto eastbound Spring Street from MLK and did not see the pedestrian until the last minute, Lt. Greer said. Elizabeth was issued a ticket for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
On the early evening of Feb. 24, 2014, another Township resident, Committeeman Jeff Grayzel, was bruised by an SUV that hit him while he was in a Washington Street crosswalk near Schuyler Place. The driver in that accident, Angel Vega, 44, of Morristown, also received a summons.
A Parsippany man, Joseph Reo, 47, was treated for injuries after being struck by a hit-and-run driver in a nearby crosswalk, at Washington Street and North Park Place.
I noticed that many of the Yield for Pedestrian signs were removed or
damaged with the snow plowing. Lets try to get them replaced. I’ve seen
a few close calls where one lane stops but the second one doesn’t see the pedestrian
in front of the first vehicle and has to stop short.
