Why do random blobs of color that look like a house painter’s drop cloth fetch millions at auction, while timeless classics of dogs playing poker can be found at your neighbor’s garage sale for pocket change?

Such mysteries of 21st-century art collecting will be revealed in Morristown on Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, by Virginia Fabbri Buteracurator of the Therese A. Maloney Art Gallery at the College of Saint Elizabeth.

Ginny, a scholar and art consultant who chairs the school’s art and music departments, will be joined at The Gallery at 14 Maple at 6 pm by artists Kiyomi Baird, Willie Cole, Richard Eger and Wayne Charles Roth for a free two-hour talk that will dissect the $66 billion global art market.

Among other subjects, they plan to help visitors discover:

  • Why collecting art can also be a smart financial investment.
  • How to spot an emerging artist whose value is likely to increase quickly.
  • How to buy or commission art for your collection.
  • How to work with an Art Advisor, a Gallery and/or an Artist.
  • How on-line art buying gives collectors more leverage and choice.
  • What kind of art to collect, what the latest art trends are and much more.

Friday’s talk is the first in a series of free lectures designed to help people start or enhance their art collections, for fun or as investments.  It’s presented in conjunction with Morris Arts.  Anyone interested in attending should RSVP to Ginny.
