Morristown police: Portion of Spring Street closed temporarily, for concerns about structure collapse

Spring Street has been closed between Speedwell and Martin Luther King avenues for Friday afternoon’s anticipated heavy showers, out of concerns that a partially collapsed structure on Spring Street might experience further problems, police said.

“Construction officials are concerned that the heavy rain we are about to experience could cause the damaged structure at 115 Spring St. to further collapse,” said Lt. Stuart Greer. “Out of a concern for vehicle and pedestrian safety, the decision was made to close the roadway until this strong rain storm passes.”

The officer added: “We expect this will cause traffic congestion and delays but want to ensure everyone is safe.”

On Thursday, fire and rescue officials responded to the partial collapse of the snow-laden roof at a vacant car dealership on Spring Street.  Part of the roof of a former video store next door also collapsed.
