ATLANTIC HEALTH SYSTEM LEAPS TO #25 ON FORTUNE MAGAZINE’S ‘100 BEST COMPANIES TO WORK FOR®’

MORRISTOWN, NJ – JANUARY 2014 – Now in its 6th consecutive year on the list, Atlantic Health System, one of the largest health care systems in New Jersey, climbed to 25th in the nation on FORTUNE® magazine’s list of “100 Best Companies to Work For®.”

Ranking in the elite top 25 of FORTUNE’s list, Atlantic Health System is not only the highest-ranked hospital system from New Jersey, but also the highest-ranked NJ-based company on the list.

The parent company of Morristown Medical Center in Morristown, Overlook Medical Center in Summit, Newton Medical Center in Newton, Chilton Medical Center in Pompton Plains, and Goryeb Children’s Hospital, ranked 49 last year on the prestigious list, which includes some of the country’s best-known and successful corporations such as Google, Whole Foods, Zappos and Cisco. The list will appear on newsstands on Monday, January 20, 2014.

“The key to our success, not only as an employer but also as a leader in health care, has been to reinforce the value we place in all of our employees, at every level of experience and talent,” said Andrew Kovach, Vice President, Human Resources and Chief Administrative Officer, Atlantic Health System. “Our continued recognition on the FORTUNE list reflects the engaged workforce and supportive environment that has allowed our organization to flourish.”

Atlantic Health System was selected among hundreds of companies vying for a place on the list this year. Applicant companies opt to participate in the selection process, which includes an employee survey and an in-depth questionnaire about their programs and company practices. Great Place to Work® then evaluates each application using its unique methodology based on five dimensions: credibility, respect, fairness, pride and camaraderie.

Creators of the list, Great Place to Work® have found that employees believe they work for great organizations when they consistently trust the people they work for, have pride in what they do and enjoy the people they work with.

Atlantic Health System’s high ranking was driven by the positive responses of its employees to the FORTUNE questionnaire – 93 percent or more of the employees who responded said the organization offered great rewards, and 95 percent or more of the respondents said the organization offered a great atmosphere, great communication, great challenges and great bosses. Of the responses, 98 percent of Atlantic Health System employees experienced great pride.

Atlantic Health System offers its employees several opportunities to develop and enhance their professional skills and careers as well as their personal lives and well-being.

The organization offers a mentorship program in which seasoned employees volunteer to become mentors to share their expertise and experience with aspiring leaders at AHS. The organization also features a faculty academy, in which employees who are well-known experts in their respective fields volunteer as internal speakers who share their knowledge with others. Similarly, a physician leadership academy helps physicians enhance their roles within the organization.

For employees who are interested in transferring to another position, Atlantic Health System offers “lunch and learn” sessions that include helpful knowledge on new careers, resume writing and interview skills.

In its recognition of Atlantic Health System, FORTUNE also noted the organization’s efforts to recruit and retain a multigenerational workforce. Atlantic Health System has also been recognized by AARP for six consecutive years for its inclusion of older workers.

Noting that 92 percent of Atlantic Health System employees responded that they want to work for the company for a long time, FORTUNE highlighted many of the organization’s initiatives to retain older workers, such as the 1,000 Hour Club, which allows retirees to remain working at Atlantic Health System.

Other benefits that have driven the high marks in employee satisfaction at Atlantic Health include:

  • The organization’s efforts to recognize and reward accomplishments, including various awards programs for actions or ideas that result in better patient care, cost savings or increased employee or patient satisfaction

  • On-site daycare that allows employees to visit their children during the day

  • Full maternity benefits for female employees and dependents of employees

  • An In-house pharmacy for employees, equipped with a drop-off center

  • Free immunizations, including the annual flu vaccine
