An arrest by Morristown police led to a search of a Washington Street apartment on Wednesday by Morris County investigators in hazmat suits who searched for evidence of a drug manufacturing operation, according to authorities.

A portion of Washington Street from Atno Avenue to the A& P was closed for much of the afternoon.

An armored vehicle, a truck from the Morris County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad, a Morris County Hazmat truck and Morristown fire and ambulance vehicles parked in front of a house at 119 Washington St.

By mid-afternoon, several investigators in hazmat suits emerged from the home, as neighbors watched from sidewalks and lawns.

Morristown police had made an arrest late Tuesday after responding to a noise complaint, said Capt. Steve Sarinelli.

In the course of their investigation, he said, they learned that drugs were in the apartment and that a manufacturing operation may have been ongoing.

The hazmat response was a precaution, Capt. Sarinelli said.

“It’s just to be on the safe side,” he said. “In drug manufacturing, chemicals can be volatile.”

Neighbors were told that they were in no danger.
