The coffeehouse is in style again, at Morristown High

MHS Coffee HouseIn the ’60s a coffeehouse was a party for the literary, musical and ultra-cool in a cramped basement space.

At Morristown High School, the coffeehouse is a party for artistic, literary, musical and techie students in an airy, open space with windows.

The vibe includes everyone.  Even the parent chaperones, the assistant principal and (of course) the teacher-advisors of WJSV, the radio station club that runs the technical set up for the affair.

Last Friday’s coffeehouse featured 20 acts, up from 15 last year.  Zaji Zabelerio, who runs the coffeehouse committee also is Master of Ceremonies.  The committee sets up tables and decorates.  Shannon Kikuchi chooses the art work that will be displayed.

The venue is supportive, there’s no competition, only appreciation for the singing, playing and literary readings.

Friday’s event was well attended from 6:30 pm, when the acts started and the parent booster group served chicken, through to cake-cutting, and 10 pm shutdown and cleanup.

According to some, the best part is that, unlike the dances, students are allowed to go home early.

It’s also free, so students can afford to check it out.  See if they like the ambiance.  Head off when they want to go.  That makes the size of the cleanup crew all the more impressive.

There will be two more coffeehouses in the spring.
