As Newark continues to grapple with the after-effects of Hurricane Sandy, a Morristown nonprofit has stepped up to help.

People Helping People in Need is collecting new blankets and coats, fresh fruit and bottled water through Friday, Nov. 9, at the Marion Sally Residents Center at 23 Clyde Potts Dr. in Morristown. Drop-off hours are 9 am to 2 pm.

helping handsPeople also can deliver their donations in Newark at a live radio broadcast by WBLS-FM on Thursday, Nov. 8. Doors open at 6 pm at the Key Club, at 58 Park Place in Newark; live entertainment and food are scheduled to follow at 7 pm. The show will be hosted by WBLS personalities D.J. Qua and Lenny Green.

Qadriyyah Sakhu, volunteer coordinator for People Helping People, said this relief drive shifted its focus to Newark because several agencies already are helping in Morristown.

“There still are a whole lot people in need, especially in Essex County,” she said. “Newark– it’s really bad down there.”

As the situation eases in Newark, she said, the organization will concentrate on helping Shore communities devastated by the Oct. 29 hurricane.  People Helping People, established 14 years ago, is working with Our Youth Their Future, an organization co-founded by Morristown Councilwoman Toshiba Foster.

Blankets are especially coveted by families whose apartments have lost heat, Qadriyyah said. New blankets are requested because some agencies have encountered bedbug problems with used items, she said.

Fresh fruit and bottled water are preferable to canned goods, she added, because many hurricane victims do not have working stoves right now.

The Morristown Fire Department also will be collecting items for Hurricane Sandy victims, on Nov. 11 at the fire station on Speedwell Avenue. And Calvary Baptist Church on Martin Luther King Avenue is running a coat drive.
