Student: ‘Classics Academy’ spared at Morristown High School

Classics Academy has gotten a reprieve at Morristown High School and will continue for a third year, according to a student enrolled for the fall.

“They called each of us individually down to the MHS Guidance Department to announce that they will keep the Classics Academy program in the high school,” Shannon Kikuchi, a junior, said via email. “Classics Academy students of 2013 are now looking forward to a great senior year!”

The experimental honors program, which puts an ancient Greek- and Roman spin on modern subjects, was on the verge of being eliminated because only six students had signed up for next semester.

Several past and present students spoke passionately in defense of Classics Academy at Tuesday’s school board meeting. They included Shannon and other juniors who had signed up for Classics Academy, and feared it would be late to switch to other advanced courses if the program was scrapped.
