Two harps are better than one.
Duo Scorpio proved that on Sunday at the Presbyterian Church in Morristown.
Kathryn Andrews and Kristi Shade demonstrated their versatility and virtuosity during an hour-long program that began with classical pieces from the 18th and 19th centuries and ended with challenging contemporary pieces by Bernard Andres and Sebastian Currier.
This video clip is a lush classical selection, Aragonaise, from Jules Massenet’s 1885 opera Le Cid. The transcription is by Clifford Woolridge.
Kathryn and Kristi, both 29, have degrees from the Manhattan School of Music. They bring a sparkling stage presence to match their lively playing. Kristi cracked up Sunday’s audience by suggesting that harpists spend 75 percent of their time tuning their instruments…and 25 percent of their time playing out of tune.
Happily, we heard no evidence to support her contention!
