Sunday Seminar at the Presbyterian Church in Morristown: The End of Things

The Presbyterian Church in Morristown is proud to announce a three week seminar series led by the Rev. Dr. David Lawrence. The seminars will take place on January 29, February 12 and February 19th at 9:15 am in the Parish House (located at 65 South Street). This series will explore both biblical and popular conceptions of what will come at the world’s end.
Near the end of the 20th century, theologian Shirley Guthrie noted that “as a rule the biblical writers were not even interested in the details of ‘what it will be like….’ They had no time to sit around speculating and arguing about when, where and how new life in the kingdom of God would come; they were too busy living here and now in… anticipation of it.”
In this class, however, we will be discussing several matters related to “the end of things.” What is heaven? What is hell? Who is going where? If Jesus is “the only way,” what happens to those who in their lifetimes have never been introduced to him? Do the gospel writers’ portrayals of Jesus offer any help in figuring out what happens at the end of things? Are biblical books like Revelation any real help in understanding the end of things? What will the revealed kingdom of God be like?
After serving churches in LaFayette, New York and East Hanover and Whippany, New Jersey, Dr. Lawrence was Parish Associate for Pastoral Psychotherapy at The Presbyterian Church in Morristown for 25 years. He retired after 40+ years in ministry in 2009. He still preaches and teaches regularly and serves as Adjunct Faculty in the Doctor of Ministry program at Drew University Theological School.
