A plane crashed mid- Tuesday morning in a median of 287 between exits 33 and 35. The nearest exit, James Street near Harter Road is closed. For the time being, 287 is basically shut down. James Street is also unavailable to traffic.

Township Mayor Scott Rosenbush shared with reporter Kevin Coughlin that the preliminary reports are that no one on the ground was hurt.  Within the plane however, there were multiple fatalities.  A pile of wreckage lies on the highway with debris scattered in the woods.

The small plane is thought to have originated from Teterboro airport.  Eyewitnesses reported seeing smoke coming off the wings of the plane.  They watched it pitch at odd angles prior to the crash.  One eyewitness was traveling north on 287, heard irregular, halting noise that sounded like a chain saw associated with tree work.  She saw the crash in her rear view mirror:  black smoke followed by a eerie silence.
