The Rev. Canon John Hartnett, rector of St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church in Ridgewood, donned a tasseled cap, pulled up a candle beside the fireplace and read Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” as the writer himself used to perform it. St. Peter’s parishioner Greg LeCleir decked the halls in Victorian style, including an upside-down Christmas tree, and provided several courses of refreshments throughout the evening.

On Sunday, congregants will take their turn at decorating when they gather at St. Peter’s for the “greening” of the church for Christmas following the 10 a.m. worship service with children’s pageant.
