Atlantic Health, which operates Morristown Memorial Hospital and Overlook Hospital in Summit, is considering adding Newton Memorial Hospital to the fold.
Atlantic Health spokesman Rob Seman issued this statement:

“Atlantic Health and Newton Memorial Hospital have been in discussions since January to assess how our hospitals might build on our strong professional and clinical relationships, and further partner to serve current and future patients. After a preliminary period of review, we have been exploring merging Newton Memorial and its affiliates into Atlantic Health. These discussions will continue in the coming weeks in which we hope to determine the best direction in which to move forward.”
He could not discuss how the merger would affect services at Morristown Memorial, which is Morristown’s largest employer.
According to the Daily Record, Newton Memorial Hospital is:
a short-term, fully accredited, 146-bed acute care, not-for-profit hospital serving more than 250,000 people in Warren and Sussex counties in New Jersey, Pike County, Pa., and southern Orange County in New York.
On Wednesday, the Sussex County freeholders endorsed the merger, reports the New Jersey Herald. Support from Morris-area officials probably also will be necessary for the merger to obtain approval from the state Department of Health and Senior Services, according to the Daily Record.
